Mullers Optometrists have partnered with Shine Educational Organisation for the past 6 years in bringing Eyecare to the Foundation phase learners in some of their schools. It is a campaign that we are extremely proud of and which is very close to our hearts!
This year we took up the challenge of ‘5 schools in 5 days’. Each one of our five Mullers branches volunteered staff to care for an individual school and oversee the Vision screening process there for that day. We could impart our skills to those in need and this also allowed Mullers staff a view not only of the challenges faced by our youth, but also a glimpse into the successes that can be achieved with simple, solid interventions.
“ A child cannot read if a child cannot see.”
At the heart of the program is a reliable screening programme for all grade 1 children, designed to identify refractive issues (need for spectacles), Ocular health (looking for pathology), colour vision (identify colour blindness), Stereopsis (3D vision) and Muscle balance (including squints and lazy eyes). Another aspect is attending to new children at the school, children previously identified as being at risk of needing spectacles and those now wearing spectacles (retests)
In total we managed to screen a total of 366 children, a total of 54 pairs of spectacles are in the process of production for supply. A additional group of 15 children were identified as requiring closer monitoring and in need of complex care in our practice environment – some of these will require spectacles or even referral on for eye related medical care.
“ It’s really gratifying to see the children in the Shine schools blossom, becoming more confident and achieving better school marks every year”
