Our History

A FAMILY TRADITION

Mullers is South Africa’s oldest and longest established optometrist.

We turned 125 in 2015 and are still owned and run by the original family of the Joseph Muller who arrived in Cape Town from Germany in 1890.

We have been leaders in the eye-care business ever since.

For over 100 years the business has been run in close association with the British College of Optometrists.

Two of the founder’s five sons were admitted to the prestigious British College of Optometrists and later three of his four grandsons.

Today his great grandson, Peter, runs the business with partner and co-director, Brevan Robinson.

YESTERDAY TODAY AND TOMORROW

Today we have six attractive locations in Cavendish Square, Constantia Village, Century City, Bellville, Tyger Valley and in Parliament Street, Cape Town.

Over the years the business clung closely to the tradition of providing exceptional service combined with most modern technology, and has expanded to meet the needs of an ever-growing number of clientele.

KEEPING ABREAST

Mullers prides itself on offering its clients the very best in the latest in eye testing technology, a world-leading, German based lens making facility and the very latest in fashion frames. We were the first to offer Ray-Ban sunglasses and continue to offer such prestigious brands as Oliver Peoples, Prada, Paul Smith to mention a few.

In everything we do we strictly follow our founder’s principle of providing integrity and excellent quality at competitive prices which adds up to ‘eyewear you can trust’.

“It’s like going back to the turn of the century in a time machine.”

Mullers Museum

In keeping with the Mullers building’s reputation as an icon of art deco architecture, and a Cape
Town inner city landmark, an optometry museum has been created on the third floor.

Mullers memorabilia, record books, spectacle frames, clocks and artefacts dating back to 1890 are on display.

The Mullers Museum is open to the public and interest groups daily during normal business hours.
